TUNBRIDGE Wells Rugby Club go into tomorrow's relegation six-pointer with Heathfield with something the Sussex visitors can't buy for love or money at the moment – that winning feeling.

Victory at Old Mid-Whitgiftians on Saturday was Wells' first in six matches, while Heathfield haven't tasted success since November 19, six games ago. Something has to give at St Mark's.

Coach Paul Miles, who, together with Mav Anderson is in charge of the team, is looking forward to the visit of the Sussex strugglers and is hoping last week's victory is a sign of things to come for the rest of the season.

"It is a relegation six-pointer, so to speak," he said. "If we lose, we will be looking at picking up points in another game and would be looking down, rather that up.

"Heathfield are a very big side, so we know we have to be good up front in the tackles and can't afford to miss many tackles. I am looking forward to the game with a mixture of trepidation and excitement.

"While we won, there were obviously little things we need to improve on and we need to keep improving week in and week out, so we can be more consistent. We are trying to give the boys more confidence, so they can play better under pressure and bring up their physicality – they seem to be responding to it so far."

Miles and Anderson took over from former coach Jim Scully in November and while wins have proved hard to come by, there does seem to be positive signs the team could be turning a corner.

Wells are in the lower regions of London 2 South East and Miles is targeting just one thing before the end of the season – survival, although, it is still unclear whether two, or three, teams will go down this season.

"We have got to be realistic and the players know where we are at the moment – it is a case of making sure we survive this season," he said.

"We will then hope to build on that next season – survival is the goal and nothing above that. It is all about building the team's confidence up – that is what we have been trying to do."

That confidence will be further raised if a win can be secured against Heathfield tomorrow, kick-off 2.15pm.
