Tunbridge Wells allotment rates to double from 2013

It's predicted that Tunbridge Wells Borough Council will significantly increase charges to rent allotment space in the town from 2013.

A report issued last week by Peter Every, Parks & Sports Team Leader, indicates the costs will increase by as much as 113%.

Currently in Tunbridge Wells there are 587 tenanted allotment plots, and there is always a high level of demand for them - currently 180 people are waiting for space.

Given the desirability of allotments, combined with the lower rental price of those plots under management by TWBC compared to private allotments - such as Hawkenbury, Philpots Lane and Vauxhall Road - the Council clearly feel that a rise is feasible - but they have promised that any increase will still take the annual charges to less than those demanded by private allotments.

Reaction from locals has been mixed on Twitter.

Local Lib Dem representatives (@TWlibdems) fumed "how is that justifiable!" while Jez Timms (@MisterJez) was equally angry. "People grow food to beat these hard times and they want to tax it even more.. mental."

Johnathan Hodge (@jonhedge) wasn't too concerned, "Well, I currently pay £26 a year for 250sq ft, that includes water! I wouldn't worry too much about doubling it."

Allotment rent increases will be discussed further tomorrow (Tuesday) evening.

What do you think about the hike? Does it affect you?

If we are to pay double then I would want the council to do the following for allotment holders:

-Maintain,and replace where necessary ,hedges around the allotments
-Mow the paths more frequently, and take away the grass clippings
    -Install more water supplies
    -Ensure gates are properly maintained
-Offer water butts, compost bins and wood chip at cost price
-Take away non compostable refuse from sites
