Shoppers in Tunbridge Wells had their first chance to do some bargain hunting in the new Salvation Army Trading Company Ltd (SATCoL) charity shop as it opened its doors at 6 Camden Road on Thursday (14 February).
SATCoL Tunbridge Wells shop manager Giovanni Ranaldo watches as Major Gareth Heward cuts the ribbon.
After a special opening ceremony including a blessing from representatives of The Salvation Army, the shop's team of staff and volunteers welcomed a crowd of customers eager to pick up a few bargains from the store.
"We've been very busy getting the shop ready for a while now and the response from local residents has been fantastic," said shop manager Giovanni Ranaldo. "People have been regularly popping by, keen to see what's going on and how they can help. We've also had some very generous donations from locals so we're absolutely thrilled. We hope that now we're open the local residents will enjoy shopping here, as we've got some fabulous bargains on sale at very reasonable prices."
The shop sells quality donated goods including clothes, accessories, bric-a-brac and household goods. With profit from the shop gift-aided to The Salvation Army to help fund its valuable work throughout the UK, the team is confident that shoppers will be tempted by the quality of the goods on offer, knowing that their money is going to a well-loved charity. Homeless shelters, substance misuse centres and family tracing services are just some of the services The Salvation Army delivers.
Customers at the new shop's opening were also offered one of the store's innovative new loyalty cards. The free double-sided card rewards customers each time they spend £5 in the shop or donate their unwanted items using one of the shop's reuseable 're:bags'. Each time a customer spends £5 in-store, one side of their re:ward card will be stamped, with 10 stamps entitling customers to a £5 credit to spend in-store. On the other side of the card is the reward scheme for donations to the store, which works in conjunction with a re:bag – a reusable black, white and red bag that can be bought in-store for 99p. Each time a re:bag is brought into the store full of donations, a stamp to the value of £2 will be given.
"We hope that this fantastic start continues and local people will continue to support us by shopping, donating and thinking about whether they'd like to become part of our team of volunteers" said Giovanni. "We're particularly keen for volunteer drivers with their own transport who can assist us with collections of small, portable furniture items, as we know there's big demand for this type of stock."
