Tunbridge Wells students achieve record A-level results
In line with the rest of the UK, A-level passes in Tunbridge Wells have risen for the 29th year in a row as teenagers face an intense battle for university places, and those who miss out on a place this year could face tuition fees of up to £9,000 a year.
According to the BBC, the overall pass rate is up slightly, but for the first time in 14 years there has been no increase in the total proportion getting A or A* grades. Just over 27% of entries scored these grades, with a small rise in the proportion awarded A*.
Of particular mention are the 128 girls at the Tunbridge Wells Grammar School for Girls (TWGGS) who scored an impressive 57.6% at grade A* or A. Staff were understandably thrilled, announcing that "we are delighted with this year's results which are the best ever, a product of the dedication, enthusiasm and talent of both girls and their teachers."
Over at the Skinners' School, there was much celebration on hearing that their 115 candidates scored of 54.1% at grade A* or A.
The annual increases in A-level pass rates however has prompted a Government review, with Education Secretary Michael Gove ordering an assessment of A-levels to see how they compare with exam systems in other countries. He has also said he wants more emphasis on a final exam which stretches candidates' capacity for original thought.
How did you (or your child) get on today? Were your results as expected? What's next for you if so?
