The demand for private rented accommodation is outstripping supply, according to new figures from ARLA.

It surveyed 6,000 of its members throughout the UK and nearly three-quarters reported that the clamour for tenancies has risen considerably in the past year.
As a result of this, renters are extending their contracts for a record-high 19 months, as many are worried that the competitive nature of the market will mean they cannot secure a better or more suitable home.
ARLA president Tim Hyatt has urged the government to give landlords more incentive to invest in new-builds in order to boost the housing market.
"There is a finite amount of rental property and unless both housing supply and mortgage availability improves then renters will find that their options in the market are reduced," he commented.
