A number of classic car shows have been held this year in and around the Tunbridge Wells area. Wings, Wheels & Wartime in Kent, is held in Groombridge. All types of classics are to be seen, including Holden cars from Australia, with 400 plus cars attending. The most recent was held on 1st July 2012 and one of the most popular events in the Groombridge calendar, with a singalong to wartime favourites.
On a different note there is, interestingly, a group of car enthusiasts who make available a number of classic cars for weddings in and around the Tunbridge Wells area. This is called Classic Wedding Car Hire and specialises in cars from England, America and France all with fascinating histories from 1903 to 1974; one was featured in the Agatha Christie film Murder on the Orient Express and one was the 1933 London Motor Show car. Of more topical interest Silver Ghost recently appeared in Downton Abbey.
One of the oldest motor clubs in Tunbridge Wells is the TWMC, originally the Tunbridge Wells Motor Cycle Club. The first event for cars was in 1947 and developed into the annual Rally consisting of Concours d’Elegance and driving tests. There were five classes of cars:
1. Veteran Cars before 1905
2. Edwardian Cars from 1905-1916
3. Vintage Cars from 1917-1930
4. Cars manufactured between 1931-1940
5. Cars manufactured after 1941
In 1961, TWMC to celebrate its Golden Jubilee organised the Second Horseless Carriage Exhibition. In contrast to the very first one in 1895, which was introducing the car as a new invention, this time it was a celebration of the established motor car. On exhibition on the Pantiles was a car from each year of the club’s existence. In 1995 the club took over SEMSEC (South East Motor Sport Enthusiasts Club), which organises race and sprint meetings at Lydden and provides the majority of the competition events attended by TWMC today. TWMC now organises many social event including tenpin bowling, barbecues and the like with its speciality being the annual All Circuit Sprint Championship, where events run at mainly Lydden and Goodwood in the south.
One future event for classic car enthusiasts, in the Tunbridge area is the Southern Classics Early Summer Show in 2015. This is to take place from 10AM to 4PM on 26th June 2015 in Bewl Water, Tunbridge Wells and may well include a Holden car or two.
